Ukraine Could Join EU by 2027 Under US Peace Plan to End Russia War

Ukraine Could Join EU by 2027 Under US Peace Plan to End Russia War

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukraine could become a member of the European Union as early as January 2027 under the latest United States-led plan aimed at ending the ongoing war with Russia. A senior source familiar with the plan revealed that the accelerated EU accession is part of a broader peace strategy, which also involves potential territorial adjustments between Ukraine and Russia.

The EU accession process is usually long and complex, requiring unanimous approval from all 27 member states. Some nations, particularly Hungary, have consistently opposed Ukraine’s EU membership. The new US plan seeks to fast-track Ukraine’s entry while securing international backing and guarantees. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Washington holds the necessary leverage to influence EU countries currently blocking Ukraine’s accession, stating that “the United States can take steps to unblock our path to the European Union” and that US influence will affect those who are hesitant.

European and Ukrainian leaders are requesting security assurances from the United States and EU before negotiating any territorial concessions, according to the French presidency. The Elysee highlighted the need for full visibility on these guarantees prior to any settlement discussions concerning disputed territories. Zelensky is scheduled to meet European leaders, as well as heads of the EU and NATO, in Berlin on Monday to discuss the peace plan and the ongoing negotiations.

Since the pro-European revolution in 2014, Ukraine has pursued EU membership and implemented various reforms, including anti-corruption measures, although challenges remain. The US-backed plan proposes that only Ukrainian troops would withdraw from certain areas in the eastern Donetsk region, creating a demilitarized buffer zone as a “free economic zone” to separate the two armies.

Moscow expressed caution over recent updates to the US plan, suggesting the new proposals might worsen the situation. Kremlin officials said they had not yet received the updated version of the plan since meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US envoys in Moscow.

Meanwhile, Ukraine reported territorial gains near Kupiansk in the northeast, a strategic city and key railway hub. Zelensky personally visited troops stationed near the city and shared a video showing the frontline. In another development, a Russian airstrike damaged a Turkish-owned cargo vessel in Odesa, Ukraine’s Black Sea region, prompting Ankara to call for a halt to attacks on port infrastructure. Turkey has expressed concern over a growing escalation in the Black Sea following naval drone attacks claimed by Ukraine on Russia-linked tankers.

The US plan, aiming to end the war while supporting Ukraine’s EU ambitions, marks a critical step in diplomatic efforts to stabilize Eastern Europe and reinforce Ukraine’s path toward integration with Western institutions.
