Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has indicated that discussions are underway regarding the potential deployment of U.S. troops in Ukraine to bolster security guarantees. He also addressed what he termed a misleading allegation regarding an attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin's residence during his talks with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Zelenskiy emphasized Ukraine's commitment to ending the war initiated by Russia's invasion in 2022. He expressed his willingness to meet with Putin in any format to facilitate peace, stating, “I informed President Trump and European leaders of my readiness for any type of discussion with Putin. The key is for the Russians not to harbor fear,” he remarked.
Previously, Trump mentioned that an agreement to conclude the war might be near, although discussions regarding territorial disputes remain unresolved. He proposed that European nations should shoulder the majority of peacekeeping duties, backed by U.S. support.
Russia has made accusations against Ukraine, alleging an attack on a presidential estate in the Novgorod region involving 91 long-range drones. Ukraine refuted this claim, labeling it “completely false,” suggesting it serves as a pretext for increased assaults and hindered peace efforts. French officials also affirmed that there is no evidence backing the Russian assertions.
Despite these accusations, the Kremlin has not substantiated its claims of an attack. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov condemned the incident as “state terrorism” and cautioned about potential retaliatory actions while maintaining the opportunity for negotiations.
The situation is further escalating at sea, with Ukrainian officials reporting additional Russian drone strikes targeting ports and civilian vessels in the Odesa region, vital for trade and the wartime economy. In retaliation, Ukraine has employed sea drones against vessels involved in Russia's sanctions evasion operations.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has voiced optimism that peace may be realized within weeks with U.S. military support, mentioning the potential deployment of U.S. soldiers to frontline areas, although no specifics have been disclosed and the White House has refrained from commenting.
Zelenskiy’s talks with Trump reflect Ukraine’s pursuit of international support while navigating negotiations to resolve the conflict. The circumstances remain precarious, with ongoing Russian accusations and assaults complicating diplomatic initiatives.
The outcomes of these discussions could significantly influence Ukraine's safety and the trajectory of a conflict that has persisted for nearly four years.
