UAE Faces Disruption from Severe Storms and Heavy Rainfall

UAE Faces Disruption from Severe Storms and Heavy Rainfall

Post by : Badri Ariffin

On Friday, the UAE was hit by severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, leading to significant disruptions across various emirates affecting both air travel and road conditions. Lightning, strong winds, and heavy showers created waterlogged areas and prompted authorities to issue safety advisories.

Thunderstorms Affect Major Emirates

The storm system impacted prominent areas, including Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi, unleashing hours of heavy rain. Low-lying neighborhoods were inundated, and visibility diminished notably as storm clouds gathered over major highways. Local teams were dispatched to clear flooded streets and enhance drainage systems.

Significant Flight Disruptions Reported

Airports reported considerable delays, with numerous flights being canceled or rescheduled due to poor visibility coupled with unsafe flying conditions. Passengers were encouraged to verify their flight statuses before heading to the airport, even as airlines anticipated continued delays amidst unpredictable weather.

Traffic Congestion Due to Flooding

Roadways in Dubai and Sharjah experienced severe congestion as torrential rainfall flooded critical intersections and underpasses. Motorists faced extended delays, with reports of minor accidents due to slippery road surfaces. Authorities advised drivers to reduce speed, maintain safe distances, and steer clear of flooded areas to avoid vehicle immobilization.

Safety Alerts Issued by Authorities

Government agencies have taken precautionary steps to ensure public safety. Remote work was advocated in certain sectors, and several outdoor spaces, such as parks and beaches, were temporarily closed. Emergency response teams were on standby to assist stranded motorists and residents in distress.

Impact on Residents and Community Life

Daily activities saw significant interruptions as commuters struggled to arrive at work on time, and parents were advised to stay updated on school news regarding outdoor events. Certain residential areas dealt with standing water issues, with vehicles stranded in flooded streets awaiting assistance.

Weather Forecast and Ongoing Precautions

Meteorologists have indicated that unstable weather conditions may persist, keeping the likelihood of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall elevated in the upcoming days. Residents are urged to keep abreast of official weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during peak rain, and stay alert to changing conditions.
