China Floods: Typhoon Bavi Submerges Hebei and Liaoning Streets

China Floods: Typhoon Bavi Submerges Hebei and Liaoning Streets

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Severe flooding has affected China’s northern Hebei province and northeastern Liaoning province after Typhoon Bavi brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to several regions.

Floodwaters submerged roads, damaged transport networks, and swept away vehicles in multiple areas. Videos shared on social media showed people moving through flooded streets by swimming, paddleboards, and even wake surfing as water covered neighbourhood roads.

Water Levels Rise Above Two Metres in Kuancheng

In Kuancheng County, Hebei province, floodwaters rose more than two metres on some roads, according to a local resident’s account broadcast by official media.

Kuancheng, located along the Luan River, has a population of around 240,000 people. Several vehicles were seen floating on flooded roads before being pushed away by strong currents.

Authorities reported that around 1,800 villagers were stranded in Kuancheng due to damaged roads and disrupted transport services. Rescue teams are working to relocate residents and restore access in affected areas.

Typhoon Bavi Causes Widespread Rainfall and Flood Risks

The flooding occurred after Typhoon Bavi, described as the most powerful storm to hit mainland China this year, brought intense rainfall to eastern coastal areas and strong winds to densely populated regions.

Weather authorities warned that heavy rain would continue across parts of Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Anhui provinces, increasing flood risks in areas already affected by earlier rainfall.

Hebei authorities issued warnings through WeChat, stating that during red alerts for heavy rain, work stoppages, business closures, and gatherings must be fully implemented.

Floodwaters Disrupt Life in Shenyang

In Shenyang, Liaoning province, social media videos showed streets heavily flooded, with parked vehicles almost completely submerged.

One video showed a person swimming through a flooded road, while another showed someone using a paddleboard to move through the water.

A separate video showed a man wake surfing behind a vehicle on a flooded road. Police were also seen helping push a submerged car through floodwaters.

Transport and Schools Affected

Flooding also disrupted railway operations in Shenyang. China Railway said more than 30 railway sections were affected, leading to the suspension of several train services.

Schools were closed in multiple areas, including parts of Jilin province, as authorities prepared for further severe weather conditions.

The China Meteorological Administration warned that some areas in northeastern China could experience thunderstorms, hailstorms, and strong winds. Some regions were expected to face winds above Force 8, while parts of central and northern Jiangsu could experience winds of Force 10 or higher, with possible tornado activity.

Typhoon Bavi Moves Towards Korean Peninsula

Typhoon Bavi developed in the Pacific Ocean and expanded to an area estimated to be the size of France. The storm maintained much of its strength after making landfall in eastern China on Saturday night.

Chinese meteorologists said the storm retained moisture due to its well-preserved warm core structure. As Bavi moves toward the Korean Peninsula, further heavy rainfall is expected as the system weakens and releases stored moisture.

According to China’s Ministry of Water Resources, cited by state broadcaster CCTV, 46 rivers across the country were experiencing flooding above warning levels.
