Turkmenistan’s delegation is participating in the 79th session of the World Health Assembly being held in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 18 to May 23, 2026. The delegation is led by Deputy Minister of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, Azat Ovezov.
The annual assembly has brought together representatives from World Health Organization member states to discuss global healthcare challenges, strengthen international cooperation and improve national public health systems across different regions.
During the visit to Geneva, Azat Ovezov held a bilateral meeting with World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Both sides praised the current level of cooperation between Turkmenistan and WHO and discussed future priorities in the healthcare sector.
The Turkmen delegation highlighted the success of several joint healthcare programs carried out with United Nations agencies and reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to expanding long-term cooperation with WHO in public health and medical development.
Turkmenistan also officially invited WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to visit the country in October 2026 to participate in major regional healthcare events expected to take place during the Year of Health initiatives.
As part of the working visit, Turkmen representatives also attended an informal round-table meeting at WHO headquarters with health ministers and delegation heads from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan along with WHO Europe Regional Director Dr. Hans Kluge.
The discussions focused on the final stage of institutionalizing the Roadmap for Health and Well-being in Central Asia 2026–2030, also known as RMCA 2.0. The initiative aims to strengthen regional healthcare cooperation and improve strategic partnerships among Central Asian countries.
Officials also reviewed plans for officially launching the roadmap and integrating it with broader regional healthcare programs and future events connected to the CIS Year of Health framework.
During a separate bilateral meeting with Dr. Hans Kluge, the Turkmen delegation discussed regional healthcare cooperation and future opportunities to strengthen public health systems across Central Asia.
