Turkmenistan and China have reaffirmed their strong strategic partnership during the seventh session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Cooperation held in Ashgabat. The high-level meeting marked a significant step in implementing agreements reached at the leadership level and demonstrated the shared commitment of both nations to expanding their comprehensive cooperation.
The meeting highlighted the role of top leadership in strengthening bilateral relations, with special mention of Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and China’s President Xi Jinping. Their continued engagement has elevated ties between the two countries to a new level characterized by mutual trust, strategic alignment, and long-term cooperation goals.
During the discussions, both sides reviewed progress across key sectors, including political dialogue, economic collaboration, and cultural exchanges. The intergovernmental committee was recognized as an effective platform for coordinating joint initiatives and ensuring that agreements are implemented efficiently across multiple domains.
Trade and economic cooperation emerged as a central theme of the meeting. China continues to be one of Turkmenistan’s largest trading partners, and both countries expressed interest in diversifying trade, expanding export opportunities, and creating a more favorable environment for business interactions. The focus is on building a more balanced and dynamic trade relationship that benefits both economies.
Energy cooperation remains a cornerstone of the partnership, particularly in the natural gas sector. Turkmenistan views China as a key long-term partner in energy exports, and both sides discussed ongoing projects such as the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline. Efforts are underway to enhance supply capacity and ensure stable energy flows, reinforcing energy security and economic stability.
The meeting also placed strong emphasis on transport and logistics development. Both nations are exploring ways to align Turkmenistan’s “Reviving the Great Silk Road” strategy with China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The development of multimodal transport corridors is expected to boost connectivity between Asia and Europe, increasing trade efficiency and regional integration.
In addition to traditional sectors, the discussions covered emerging areas such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, agriculture, and industrial development. Turkmenistan expressed interest in adopting advanced technologies from China to modernize its industries and improve productivity. Cooperation in agriculture, including water-saving techniques and research collaboration, was also identified as a priority.
Cultural and humanitarian exchanges were highlighted as essential components of the partnership. Educational cooperation, student exchanges, and cultural programs continue to strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries. Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining regular exchanges to deepen mutual understanding and friendship.
The meeting concluded with the signing of several agreements and memorandums covering energy, science, technology, transport, culture, and education. These documents are expected to provide fresh momentum for bilateral cooperation and open new avenues for joint development in the coming years.
