Turkey Urges SDF to Embrace Dialogue Amid Rising Tensions

Turkey Urges SDF to Embrace Dialogue Amid Rising Tensions

Post by : Saif Rahman

Turkey has urged the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to address their conflicts through dialogue, warning that the patience of regional players is diminishing. This appeal was articulated by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who emphasized Ankara's preference for peace but indicated it won't wait indefinitely.

In a recent interview, Fidan expressed Turkey's desire to avoid military action against the SDF. He highlighted that all parties should prioritize discussions and peaceful resolutions. However, he cautioned that ongoing delays in executing a critical agreement could escalate tensions dangerously.

The core issue surrounds an integration agreement signed on March 10, which was intended to lay out the SDF's integration into a wider political and security framework in Syria. Fidan mentioned that Turkey and other involved nations expect the SDF to fully uphold this agreement without alterations or procrastinations.

“Everyone is awaiting the agreement's implementation as it was enacted,” Fidan remarked. He further warned that any delays or modifications to the deal could result in severe consequences, which Turkey aims to prevent.

Turkey has historically viewed the SDF with skepticism, alleging that the group maintains close connections to Kurdish militants considered a security risk. Previously, Turkey has conducted military operations in northern Syria to counter Kurdish-led forces along its border.

The remarks from Fidan indicate that while Turkey seeks to avert renewed conflict, it is also issuing a stern warning. He expressed that the patience of all involved parties is “running out,” highlighting that diplomatic initiatives cannot persist without outcomes.

The foreign minister reiterated that Turkey prioritizes regional stability, advocating that dialogue and negotiation are preferable for achieving lasting peace over the use of force. Nonetheless, he made it clear that the responsibility lies with the SDF to fulfill its commitments.

As tensions escalate in northern Syria, Turkey's statement underscores the delicate balance between diplomatic engagement and potential conflict. The progress of peaceful discussions will largely depend on the SDF's timely and earnest response to these entreaties.
