Tuapse Oil Refinery Fire Worsens Air Quality

Tuapse Oil Refinery Fire Worsens Air Quality

Post by : Shakul

A major fire at an oil refinery in Tuapse has led to a significant decline in air quality after a reported drone attack linked to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The refinery, located along the Black Sea coast, has been burning for several days, raising environmental and safety concerns.

Authorities in Krasnodar Krai confirmed that the fire broke out following a drone strike, which is believed to have been launched from Ukrainian forces. The incident has intensified worries about infrastructure vulnerability amid the conflict.

Firefighters have been battling the blaze continuously for three days, with a large emergency response team deployed to control the situation. According to official reports, 276 firefighters and 77 vehicles are involved in efforts to contain and extinguish the fire.

The refinery, which exports a significant portion of its petroleum products, had already suspended operations after the attack earlier this month. The disruption is expected to impact supply chains and regional energy operations.

Environmental concerns are growing as the fire has produced hazardous byproducts. Officials reported that the mixture of burnt materials and rainwater has created a black residue layer in surrounding areas, potentially affecting soil and water quality.

The incident highlights the broader risks posed by attacks on critical infrastructure during ongoing geopolitical tensions. Residents in nearby areas have been advised to remain cautious due to deteriorating air quality and possible health impacts.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, while firefighting teams work to fully extinguish the blaze and prevent further environmental damage in the region.
