Effective February 1, 2026, air travel in the United States will impose a fee on passengers who do not possess a REAL ID. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has confirmed that individuals aged 18 and above lacking this federally sanctioned ID—or another acceptable form of ID—will be required to pay a non-refundable fee of $45.
The REAL ID, identifiable by a white star inside a yellow circle on many state-issued licenses, has been compulsory since May. Previously, travelers could pass through security after additional screening and receiving a caution. The Department of Homeland Security reports that about 94% of flyers are already compliant with these regulations, and the new fee is designed to incentivize others to secure the required ID.
Significance of the REAL ID
Introduced post-September 11, 2001, to enhance security at airports, obtaining a REAL ID necessitates more comprehensive documentation than a regular state-issued license, including proof of identity, residency, and legal status.
For those without a REAL ID, TSA will implement its “Confirm.ID” system to verify identities. Payment can be done online prior to arriving at the airport or directly at the airport, but this verification could take up to 30 minutes. While the payment guarantees access to the program for a travel window of 10 days, it does not assure boarding approval; unverified passengers might be denied access.
Acceptable Forms of ID
Travelers already holding federally recognized forms of ID—such as passports, military identification, permanent resident cards, and tribal-issued photo IDs—will be exempt from the fee. Additionally, TSA allows digital IDs through Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet at more than 250 airports nationwide.
Changes in Fee Structure
The initial proposal by TSA suggested an $18 charge for individuals without a REAL ID, but the finalized fee of $45 reflects the increased operational costs associated with the alternative verification system.
With these new protocols, air travelers are strongly encouraged to prepare in advance, carry valid identification, and evade unforeseen delays or additional charges while traveling through U.S. airports.
