Donald Trump may soon hold a historic phone call with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, a move that Taiwan says would be viewed very positively. However, Taiwanese officials confirmed that no official planning talks or preparations for such a conversation have taken place so far.
Speaking at parliament in Taipei, Taiwan Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung stated that the initiative for any direct communication depends entirely on Trump. He added that Taiwan’s government remains prepared if such an opportunity arises in the future.
A direct conversation between leaders of the United States and Taiwan would be historically significant because no American president and Taiwanese president have officially spoken since 1979. That was the year Washington shifted diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing under the “One China” policy.
The possibility of a phone call has already attracted global attention because China strongly opposes official interactions between Taiwan and foreign governments. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly warned against any actions that could support Taiwanese independence.
Last week, Trump again mentioned that he intended to speak with President Lai, ending speculation that his earlier remarks may have been accidental. Meanwhile, Lai Ching-te said he would discuss regional peace and China’s growing pressure on Taiwan if he gets the chance to talk with Trump directly.
The issue has become even more important because the United States is still considering a new arms sale package worth nearly 14 billion dollars for Taiwan. Washington approved another large weapons package last year as part of its long-standing support for Taiwan’s defense capabilities.
Taiwanese officials stressed that relations between Taipei and Washington remain stable despite increasing tensions in the region. Both sides have repeatedly stated that American policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged even after recent meetings between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The situation continues to be closely watched across Asia as any direct Trump-Lai communication could impact US-China relations and regional security in the Indo-Pacific region.
