Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has announced its Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) rate for April, confirming that electricity consumers will receive a slightly reduced rebate of 0.47 sen per kilowatt hour (kWh). The adjustment reflects ongoing volatility in global fuel markets and currency exchange rates, which directly influence power generation costs.
According to TNB, the AFA mechanism is designed to ensure that electricity tariffs remain responsive to changes in the cost of fuels such as coal and natural gas. However, the rebate will not apply to domestic consumers using 600 kWh or less per month, equivalent to an estimated bill of RM215.98, as part of measures to shield lower-usage households from cost fluctuations.
The utility provider also explained that AFA rates are reviewed and updated monthly, with any changes automatically reflected in users’ electricity bills. The final rate is subject to confirmation by the Energy Commission or determined through official government decisions, ensuring regulatory oversight in the pricing process.
In addition, TNB released its three-month outlook for AFA rates, forecasting 3.9 sen/kWh for May, 9.1 sen/kWh for June, and 8.0 sen/kWh for July. These projections suggest potential increases in the coming months, depending on fuel price trends. The AFA mechanism replaces the earlier Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) system, offering a more flexible and transparent approach to electricity tariff adjustments in Malaysia.
