Thailand’s Ministry of Transport has announced a major push toward modernizing the country’s transportation network through stronger coordination with the Senate’s Transportation Committee. Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn led a high-level meeting in Bangkok focused on improving infrastructure, public transport systems, and road safety while reducing transportation costs for citizens.
The meeting brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Transport and members of the Senate committee chaired by Wuttichat Kalyanamit. Authorities discussed several urgent national transport issues and emphasized the need for close cooperation between the executive and legislative branches to accelerate pending reforms and infrastructure projects that directly affect public welfare.
One of the key priorities discussed was the advancement of the Integrated Ticketing Act. Officials believe the proposed legislation will help create a more seamless public transport experience across Thailand while lowering travel expenses for commuters. The meeting also reviewed progress on the Rail Transport Act and revisions to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand Act aimed at improving the efficiency of the country’s rail network.
Transport officials also addressed the impact of fluctuating global fuel prices on citizens and public transport operators. The government confirmed that fares for buses, electric trains, and ferry services would remain frozen to ease financial pressure on the public. Thailand’s Cabinet has approved more than 2 billion baht in financial assistance for transport operators including truck drivers, taxi services, public motorcycles, vans, minibuses, and intercity buses.
Road safety and the issue of overloaded trucks were also major concerns during the discussion. Authorities agreed to strengthen enforcement through the use of advanced Weigh-In-Motion technology that can automatically detect overloaded vehicles and send data directly to highway police. A pilot project has already started in Saraburi province as part of efforts to reduce road damage, accidents, and corruption linked to illegal overloading practices.
The Ministry of Transport additionally proposed the development of a centralized digital platform linking GPS tracking systems for freight vehicles. Officials said the platform would help monitor truck movement more effectively while allowing businesses to legally manage additional cargo loads through proper taxation and regulation instead of relying on illegal practices.
Another important topic was the Southern Economic Corridor or Land Bridge project, which is expected to span nearly 90 kilometers and significantly reduce transportation time and logistics costs in southern Thailand. The government is currently encouraging private sector investment in the project to reduce pressure on state finances while continuing consultations with local communities and stakeholders to ensure long-term economic benefits.
Concluding the meeting, Minister Pipat stated that the government remains committed to building a transport system that is affordable, safe, environmentally friendly, punctual, and accessible to all citizens. He added that the ministry will continue listening to expert recommendations in order to improve transport services and support Thailand’s economic growth.
