The Government of Thailand has officially opened the Student Loan Fund Pre-Approve system for the 2026 academic year starting from May 16, aiming to provide better educational opportunities for financially disadvantaged students across the country. The initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to reduce social inequality and support equal access to education for Thai youth.
Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, said the government continues to prioritize education as a key tool for national development. She explained that the Student Loan Fund, widely known as SLF, is designed to assist students who face financial difficulties but wish to continue their studies at secondary, vocational, or university levels.
Under the newly launched Pre-Approve system, the fund will screen and approve eligible new borrowers before they formally apply for education loans. Priority will be given to students who hold state welfare cards, students who previously received support from the Equitable Education Fund, and students from low-income families earning less than 360,000 baht annually. The system also focuses on students studying in fields considered important for Thailand’s national development.
According to the announcement, secondary school and vocational students can access the Pre-Approve system from May 16 to June 13, 2026. University students will be able to submit applications between June 1 and July 13, 2026. Students must complete the process through the official Student Loan Fund website before moving forward with the loan application in the DSL system.
The government also clarified that existing borrowers who are continuing their studies at the same institution can confirm their loan disbursement requests through the DSL system from May 16 until August 31, 2026. Officials encouraged all students to prepare the necessary documents in advance to avoid delays during the application process.
Authorities stated that the Pre-Approve system is intended to simplify procedures and ensure that financial assistance reaches students who genuinely need support. The initiative is also expected to reduce uncertainty for families struggling with rising education costs and economic pressure.
The Student Loan Fund further explained that new borrowers include students who have never taken loans before, as well as former borrowers who changed their level of education or transferred to a different educational institution. Students have been advised to carefully follow all instructions and deadlines provided by the fund.
Thai officials believe the new system will help expand educational access, improve social mobility, and strengthen the country’s future workforce by supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds who may otherwise struggle to continue their education.
