Thailand is moving ahead with plans to modernize and improve the safety of its railway system after Deputy Minister of Transport Siripong Angkasakulkiat visited the State Railway of Thailand Electrified Train Company Limited to review operations and provide new policy directions.
The visit took place at Bangkok Central Station where the deputy minister met executives and staff of the Red Line suburban electric train operator. The government emphasized the importance of creating a transport system that is modern, convenient, safe, and capable of supporting the country’s future economic growth.
During the meeting, Siripong highlighted the success of the government’s flat-rate travel policy, which allows passengers to use EMV contactless bank cards for train travel at affordable prices. Authorities said public usage of contactless cards has increased by more than 106 percent since the program began in December 2025.
The Ministry of Transport instructed the State Railway of Thailand to work with Krung Thai Bank to increase the number of EMV access gates at stations as passenger demand continues to grow. Officials said the government wants the Red Line system to become a leading model for modern public transportation in Thailand.
The deputy minister also stressed the need for stronger operational safety, improved service standards, and greater use of technology and innovation. He said rail transport plays a major role in reducing traffic congestion, lowering air pollution, and helping Thailand move toward its net-zero emissions target by 2050.
SRT Electrified Rail Company announced plans to launch a new “Year of Omotenashi Service” campaign focused on hospitality, equal treatment for passengers, and international-level safety standards. The company also plans to improve feeder transport systems connecting Red Line stations with nearby areas through EV buses and diesel railcar services.
In addition, the railway operator is preparing to introduce a smart monitoring system under the concept of “The Smart Railway Ecosystem.” Developed together with King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, the project will use embedded technology inside trains to monitor track and electrical systems in real time and improve maintenance efficiency.
Officials said the company will continue reporting progress on safety upgrades, passenger services, and operational improvements as Thailand works toward building a faster, cleaner, and more reliable rail network for the public.
