Thailand and Japan have strengthened discussions on future cooperation in technology, science, innovation, and education as both countries look to expand partnerships in advanced industries and human resource development.
Professor Dr. Yotsanun Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation of Thailand, welcomed Japanese Ambassador Otaka Masato in Bangkok to discuss several strategic areas including semiconductors, space technology, synchrotron research, and the expansion of the KOSEN education program in Thailand.
Thai officials said the government is prioritizing advanced technology development to create new economic growth engines and improve the country’s long-term industrial competitiveness. Japan was described as an important partner because of its expertise in technology, engineering, and scientific innovation.
One of the major topics discussed was the KOSEN curriculum, a Japanese-style technical education system currently operating at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang and King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi. Thailand is now planning to expand the program to additional universities in the next phase.
Officials also discussed cooperation in satellite technology, disaster monitoring systems, climate change studies, semiconductor development, and the construction of Thailand’s fourth-generation synchrotron light source. Agencies including NSTDA, GISTDA, NARIT, and STRI participated in the meeting.
Japanese Ambassador Otaka Masato said Thailand and Japan share a long history of cooperation in science and technology. He added that both nations can further expand partnerships in space research and satellite technology for agriculture, disaster management, and economic development.
Progress was also reported on a draft memorandum of cooperation related to space technology between Thailand’s MHESI and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Thai officials confirmed that the proposal is currently moving through approval procedures before being submitted to the Cabinet.
