Thailand’s Ministry of Education has taken a major administrative step aimed at improving efficiency and strengthening the country’s education system. The move comes as part of a broader effort to streamline operations, enhance coordination, and accelerate policy implementation across various educational bodies.
Education Minister Prasert Chantharawongthong has officially signed an order delegating significant authority to Deputy Minister Akranan Kankittinant. This delegation empowers the Deputy Minister to act on behalf of the Minister in several administrative and operational functions, marking a shift toward more agile governance within the ministry.
Under this new directive, the Deputy Minister is authorized to issue orders, grant permissions, approve initiatives, and supervise multiple key departments. These include the Department of Learning Promotion, the Institute for the Promotion of Science and Technology, Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, the National Institute of Educational Testing, the National Scout Office, and the Office of National Education Standards and Quality Assessment. The aim is to ensure that decision-making processes become faster and more effective, especially in areas related to lifelong learning and scientific advancement.
This move also reflects the government’s increasing focus on modernizing education by promoting science and technology learning, strengthening national assessment systems, and encouraging extracurricular development such as scouting. By centralizing operational authority under the Deputy Minister, the ministry seeks to create a more cohesive approach to policy execution and institutional coordination.
However, the order clearly outlines certain limitations to the delegated authority. Matters that require royal approval, high-level policy decisions, legal regulations, and issues that must be presented to the Cabinet or Prime Minister will remain under the direct authority of the Education Minister. This ensures that critical decisions continue to receive appropriate oversight at the highest level of government.
Additionally, the Deputy Minister is required to report back to the Minister upon completing assigned duties, ensuring transparency and accountability within the system. This reporting structure is designed to maintain a balance between operational flexibility and administrative control, allowing the ministry to function efficiently without compromising governance standards.
The order, which came into effect on April 16, 2026, is expected to enhance coordination among various agencies and improve the overall delivery of educational services. It signals a clear commitment by the Thai government to strengthen its education framework and adapt to evolving national and global demands in the sector.
