Thailand Tightens Bus Driver Drug Checks

Thailand Tightens Bus Driver Drug Checks

Post by : Shakul

Thailand’s Transport Company Limited (BKS) has started stricter drug testing measures for public bus drivers following new safety policies introduced by Deputy Minister of Transport Siripong Angkasakulkiat.

The operation was carried out at Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak), commonly known as Mochit 2, where authorities conducted drug tests on all bus drivers from BKS and partner transport companies before they began passenger services.

According to BKS Managing Director Atthawit Rakchamroon, the move is part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Transport to strengthen public confidence in long-distance bus travel and improve overall transportation safety standards.

Officials said nearly 100 drivers were tested during the inspection and no drugs were found in any of the samples. Test results were officially recorded in vehicle logbooks as part of safety monitoring procedures.

Authorities confirmed that if any driver is found using illegal substances, they will be immediately suspended from duty. Samples will then be sent to the Department of Medical Sciences for further confirmation before disciplinary action is taken against the employee and related transport operator.

The Ministry of Transport stated that all public transport drivers must remain completely free from alcohol and drugs to ensure passenger safety. Regular inspections and urine testing will continue at major Bangkok bus terminals including Mochit 2, Ekkamai, Southern Bus Terminal, Pinklao Bus Terminal, and the Mini Bus Terminal.

Officials added that safety inspections become even stricter during major travel periods such as the New Year and Songkran holidays when millions of passengers travel across the country. The government hopes the tougher measures will reduce road accidents and improve public trust in Thailand’s transportation system.
