Technology can accelerate change, but it cannot solve global challenges on its own, says Brigit Helms, Executive Director of the Miller Center for Global Impact at Santa Clara University.
In a recent conversation, Helms emphasized that while digital tools and innovation act as “impact amplifiers,” the real drivers of change are strong social enterprises, effective systems, and community-focused solutions.
The Miller Center, known globally for supporting mission-driven startups, works with social enterprises tackling issues such as poverty, climate change, healthcare access, and financial inclusion. These organizations often leverage technology to scale their solutions, but their success depends equally on local understanding, sustainable models, and human engagement.
Helms highlighted that technology should be seen as an enabler rather than a standalone solution. From mobile platforms improving financial access to data-driven tools supporting agriculture and healthcare, tech plays a critical role—but only when integrated with on-ground efforts.
With over three decades of experience across regions including Africa, Asia, and Latin America, Helms has worked with major institutions like the World Bank Group and McKinsey & Company, focusing on inclusive economic development.
She also stressed the importance of building ecosystems that support entrepreneurs addressing social and environmental challenges. According to her, scaling impact requires collaboration between governments, private sector players, and innovators.
As global challenges grow more complex, Helms’ message remains clear: technology can enhance solutions, but meaningful and lasting impact depends on people, partnerships, and purpose-driven innovation.
