Taiwan has announced it will not attend a major summit hosted by the World Trade Organization in Cameroon after serious issues were found in visa documents issued to its delegation. The move follows both administrative errors and a politically sensitive labeling dispute.
According to Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry, the visa documents were riddled with mistakes, including misspelled names and incorrect personal details. In some cases, officials were even wrongly identified as female. These errors raised concerns about the handling and credibility of the documentation process.
The dispute escalated further after Taiwan objected to being labeled as “Taiwan, province of China” in pre-travel documents. Taiwan, officially known in the WTO as the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu, strongly rejects any reference that implies it is part of China.
Although Cameroonian authorities later offered a workaround by exempting Taiwanese delegates from visa requirements, Taiwan said the revised documents still contained multiple inaccuracies. Officials described the handling of the issue as careless and lacking sincerity.
The Taiwan has been a member of the WTO since 2002 and remains one of the few international platforms where it participates despite diplomatic pressure from China. The incident highlights ongoing geopolitical tensions that continue to affect Taiwan’s participation in global forums.
