Cheng Li-wun has arrived in China on what she described as a “journey for peace,” marking the first such visit by a Taiwanese opposition leader in nearly a decade. The visit comes at a sensitive time as Beijing continues to push for reunification with Taiwan.
The trip also takes place ahead of an expected meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. leader Donald Trump, adding to its geopolitical significance. Cheng emphasized the importance of dialogue, stating that Taiwan must explore every opportunity to prevent conflict and promote stability.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high as China continues military activities near Taiwan, including regular deployment of warplanes and naval vessels. The United States has criticized these actions, urging Beijing to avoid escalating the situation further.
At the same time, Taiwan’s internal politics are also in focus, with its opposition-controlled parliament delaying a major defense budget aimed at strengthening military capabilities and deepening ties with the United States. The developments highlight the complex balance between diplomacy, defense, and regional security in the Taiwan Strait.
