Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Wednesday that he hopes to continue purchasing weapons from the United States, describing the defence partnership as essential for maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Speaking during a press briefing marking two years of his presidency, Lai said Taiwan faces growing military and political pressure from China. He stated that if he had the opportunity to speak directly with US President Donald Trump, he would explain that Taiwan’s defence investments are necessary to protect regional peace.
Lai said Taiwan’s future should never be decided by outside forces and stressed that democracy and freedom cannot be viewed as acts of provocation. He added that Taiwan believes strength is necessary to maintain peace and prevent conflict in the region.
The remarks came after Trump recently suggested that a new arms package for Taiwan could be used as a negotiating tool in discussions with China. Earlier this year, the United States approved a record-breaking military package worth billions of dollars for Taiwan.
China reacted strongly to Lai’s statements. Chinese officials accused him of promoting separatist views and increasing tensions across the Taiwan Strait. Beijing continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory and has repeatedly warned against foreign involvement in the issue.
Lai also said Taiwan remains willing to engage in peaceful and respectful dialogue with China, but firmly opposes any efforts aimed at forcing reunification under political pressure. He emphasized that Taiwan’s democratic system must be protected.
Apart from security concerns, Lai highlighted Taiwan’s economic strengths, especially in technology and semiconductor manufacturing. He announced a new economic plan worth billions of dollars to modernize traditional industries and support small and medium-sized businesses.
The Taiwan president said cooperation with the United States and other democratic countries would continue to grow in areas related to security, trade and advanced technology development. He added that Taiwan wants to remain a stable and responsible partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
