Stan Wawrinka, the 40-year-old Swiss tennis veteran, has confirmed that the 2026 season will be his last on the professional circuit. Renowned for his powerful one-handed backhand and three Grand Slam titles, Wawrinka competed during the golden era of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, leaving a lasting legacy in the sport.
Wawrinka’s career reached one of its highest points at the 2014 Australian Open. There, he produced one of the most memorable performances in tennis history, defeating Rafael Nadal in the final after an epic five-set victory over Djokovic in the semifinals. These moments cemented his reputation as a fearless competitor capable of stunning the sport’s biggest names.
Fans can look forward to seeing Wawrinka take on Serbia’s Laslo Djere in the first round of the Australian Open, marking his 20th singles appearance at Melbourne Park. Currently ranked 139th, he required a wildcard to enter the tournament.
Reflecting on his decision to retire, Wawrinka said that thoughts about ending his career emerged toward the end of last year. “End of last year, between October and December, I had things in my mind. I wanted to keep going, and I was happy playing. I still am,” he said. “It was quite clear that next year should be my last year. It was an easy decision, and I’m at peace with it.”
Despite his age and a body that has endured multiple knee surgeries, Wawrinka has continued to compete at a high level. He played nearly 30 matches on the ATP Challenger Tour and took breaks from the main tour when his ranking fell outside the top 150.
He began the current season on a positive note, helping Switzerland reach the final of the team-based United Cup, largely thanks to teammate Belinda Bencic’s outstanding form.
“I’m looking forward to this year,” Wawrinka said. “One year of tennis is a lot, but I’m happy to give it my all and remain competitive as long as my body allows.”
Wawrinka’s final season promises excitement and nostalgia for fans, offering a chance to celebrate the remarkable career of one of tennis’ most resilient and talented champions.
