Sri Lanka is facing severe weather conditions after continuous heavy rainfall affected several parts of the country over the past five days. According to the Disaster Management Centre, two people lost their lives due to weather-related incidents in the eastern district of Batticaloa and the northern district of Jaffna.
The persistent rain has impacted daily life across eight of Sri Lanka’s twenty-five districts. Authorities reported flooding, waterlogging and disruptions to transportation in several low-lying areas as emergency teams continued monitoring the developing situation.
Officials confirmed that more than 4,000 people have been affected by the adverse weather conditions. Many families experienced damage to homes, loss of property and temporary displacement due to rising water levels and unsafe living conditions.
As part of emergency response efforts, more than one hundred people from twenty-nine families have been moved to temporary relief centres established by local authorities. Disaster management teams are providing shelter, food and other basic support services to affected residents.
The Disaster Management Centre stated that rescue and relief operations remain active in vulnerable areas. Authorities are closely monitoring weather forecasts and river water levels to prevent further risks as rain continues in several regions.
Sri Lanka regularly experiences heavy monsoon rainfall, especially during seasonal weather changes. However, officials say recent rainfall intensity has caused significant concern due to the risk of flooding, landslides and infrastructure damage in affected districts.
Local administrations have advised residents living near rivers, low-lying zones and landslide-prone areas to remain alert and follow official safety instructions. Emergency teams have also warned people to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions.
Weather experts expect unstable conditions to continue in some parts of the country over the next few days. Authorities remain on standby as heavy rain and strong winds may further affect transportation, agriculture and local communities across Sri Lanka.
