Sri Lanka is once again facing economic pressure as fuel shortages worsen due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The disruption in oil supply routes, especially through the Strait of Hormuz, has significantly affected the country’s energy imports. As a result, long queues at fuel stations have returned, reminding citizens of the 2022 economic crisis.
The government has reintroduced a QR-based fuel rationing system to manage limited supplies. Under this system, vehicles are allowed a fixed amount of fuel per week. However, prices have surged by nearly 33%, putting additional financial pressure on citizens already struggling with rising living costs.
Sri Lanka relies heavily on imported fuel, with nearly 60% of its energy needs coming from abroad. The current crisis has exposed the country’s limited storage capacity, which can only sustain about a month’s demand. Officials warn that continued disruption could further damage transport, industries, and daily life.
Experts also highlight the wider economic impact, including rising food prices due to disruptions in fertilizer supply. Nearly half of the world’s urea passes through the affected region, and shortages could push inflation even higher in Sri Lanka and across Asia.
While the government explores alternative fuel sources and negotiations with countries like Russia, uncertainty remains. For many Sri Lankans, the situation feels like a repeat of past hardships—only this time, the crisis is driven by global conflict beyond the country’s control.
