South Korea has intensified its investigation into the recent attack on a South Korean cargo vessel near the Strait of Hormuz after officials suggested that the possibility of any group other than Iran being responsible appears low. The incident has increased global concern over maritime security in one of the world’s most important shipping routes.
According to reports, the attack took place on May 4 when the South Korean-operated cargo ship Namu, owned by shipping company HMM, was struck by unidentified objects while moving near the Strait of Hormuz. The impact caused significant damage to the lower stern section of the vessel and also triggered a fire onboard. Fortunately, the ship remained operational and no major casualties were reported.
A senior South Korean foreign ministry official stated that Seoul is currently reviewing intelligence information shared by the United States regarding the incident. The official reportedly said that based on available evidence and ongoing analysis, it appears unlikely that any entity other than Iran carried out the attack. However, South Korea has clarified that the final conclusion will depend on the outcome of the official investigation.
South Korean authorities have already dispatched expert forensic teams to Dubai, where the damaged vessel is currently undergoing inspection and repair preparations. The teams are examining the ship carefully to determine the exact nature of the attack, identify the objects involved, and collect technical evidence related to the explosion and structural damage.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most sensitive and strategically important maritime routes in the world because a large percentage of global oil and gas shipments pass through the region every day. Any disruption in the area immediately affects international energy markets, shipping costs, and global trade stability. The latest incident has once again raised fears over growing tensions in the Middle East and their impact on global commerce.
Iran has previously denied any involvement in the attack. Iranian authorities have not issued any additional detailed comments while South Korea continues its investigation. Seoul has stated that if evidence confirms Iranian involvement, it expects Tehran to respond appropriately and cooperate with international concerns regarding maritime security.
United States President Donald Trump had earlier claimed that Iran was responsible for the strike on the South Korean vessel. Following the incident, he also urged South Korea to participate more actively in international efforts led by the United States to secure commercial shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waters.
The incident comes during a period of heightened tensions across the Middle East due to ongoing regional conflicts and disruptions to oil transportation routes. Shipping companies and governments worldwide are closely monitoring developments in the region to prevent further attacks and maintain safe international maritime operations.
South Korea has emphasized that its final position will only be announced after the investigation is completed. Officials say protecting international shipping lanes and ensuring the safety of commercial vessels remain top priorities for Seoul as the probe continues.
