Singapore has urged North Korea to continue engaging with regional diplomatic platforms and maintain open communication channels as geopolitical tensions continue rising across Asia. The message was delivered by Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan during his official visit to North Korea earlier this week.
Balakrishnan met North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui in Pyongyang on May 26 as part of his broader North-east Asia diplomatic tour, which also includes China and South Korea. During the discussions, both sides exchanged views on regional security developments and international issues affecting the Asia-Pacific region.
According to Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Balakrishnan encouraged North Korea to participate actively in the ASEAN Regional Forum, also known as the ARF. The forum serves as an important platform for diplomatic and security dialogue among countries in the Asia-Pacific region, and North Korea has been a participant since 2000.
In a public statement following the meeting, Balakrishnan described the discussions as candid and constructive. He emphasized the importance of maintaining communication and cooperation during a period of increasing uncertainty and instability in the region.
The ministers also reaffirmed the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Singapore and North Korea, which completed 50 years in 2025. Singapore officials described the relationship as friendly and based on mutual respect and continuous engagement over several decades.
During the visit, Balakrishnan was hosted at an official banquet and also met Jo Yong Won, chairman of the Standing Committee of North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly. Both sides recalled North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s visit to Singapore during the historic 2018 summit with then US President Donald Trump.
The diplomatic visit comes at a sensitive time on the Korean Peninsula following recent North Korean missile tests that triggered renewed international security concerns. Regional governments continue monitoring developments closely amid ongoing tensions involving North Korea’s weapons program.
Balakrishnan’s North Korea visit followed meetings in Beijing with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, where both sides discussed Middle East tensions and called for efforts to maintain stability and secure international trade routes including the Strait of Hormuz.
Analysts believe Singapore’s outreach reflects broader regional efforts to keep diplomatic engagement alive with Pyongyang despite growing geopolitical uncertainty. Experts say maintaining dialogue platforms such as the ASEAN Regional Forum could help reduce misunderstandings and support long-term regional stability.
