Singapore is preparing to launch one of its largest urban robotics and artificial intelligence trials as the government partners with major technology companies to deploy autonomous robots across the Punggol Digital District. The initiative is expected to transform how cleaning, security patrols, and food delivery services operate in public and commercial spaces.
According to officials, eight companies including Grab, DHL, Certis, Quikbot, FieldAI, Thoughtworks, Slamtec, and Unitree will participate in the large-scale testing program. The project is being developed in collaboration with the Infocomm Media Development Authority, JTC Corporation, and the Singapore Institute of Technology.
Singapore’s Minister for Digital Development and Information, Josephine Teo, announced the initiative during the Asia Tech x Summit. She said the goal is to explore how artificial intelligence and robotics can improve service efficiency, support workers, and help address operational gaps in areas where manpower shortages remain a challenge.
Authorities revealed that the robotic systems will be tested in real-world environments including public roads, office building lobbies, university campuses, and pedestrian pathways. The trials aim to create realistic operating conditions for AI-powered autonomous machines while also helping regulators develop future safety standards and operational guidelines.
Officials said an integrated data platform will be introduced to allow robots to navigate safely across the district. The platform will support testing scenarios, digital mapping, and AI coordination systems designed to help robots respond intelligently to changing surroundings and human activity.
The initiative focuses heavily on embodied AI, a technology that combines artificial intelligence with physical robotic systems capable of perceiving, reasoning, and acting in real-world environments. Experts believe this next generation of robotics could significantly reshape urban services, logistics, and public infrastructure management over the coming years.
Authorities stated that delivery robots could improve first-mile and last-mile transportation efficiency, while security and cleaning robots could operate during off-peak hours and in difficult-to-access areas. Officials added that these systems are not intended to replace workers completely but rather support human operations and improve productivity.
The participating robot operators will reportedly receive special permissions to conduct tests across the district without needing separate approvals for each trial location. Singapore’s government said further details regarding the testing framework, operational use cases, and rollout timelines will be announced later this year before the official launch of the testbed project.
The initiative further strengthens Singapore’s position as one of Asia’s leading smart city innovators and highlights the country’s growing investment in artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital infrastructure development.
