Shinnosuke Abe resigned as manager of the Yomiuri Giants on Tuesday following his arrest over allegations that he assaulted his 18-year-old daughter at their home in Tokyo. The incident has shocked Japanese baseball fans and triggered widespread media attention because of Abe’s status as one of the country’s most recognizable sports figures.
According to Japanese media reports citing police sources, the 47-year-old former baseball star allegedly grabbed his daughter and forced her to the floor during a family dispute on Monday evening. Authorities reportedly detained Abe shortly after the incident, although he was later released by police early Tuesday morning.
During an emotional press conference, Abe apologized publicly and announced his resignation from the Giants organization. Fighting back tears, he admitted that the controversy had caused distress to baseball supporters, professional baseball officials, and the Yomiuri Giants franchise, which is considered one of Japan’s most historic and successful baseball teams.
Abe stated that he deeply regretted damaging the reputation of the Giants organization and accepted responsibility for the public controversy. He also apologized to fans and the wider baseball community, saying he felt profound remorse for the situation and the impact it had created across Japanese sports.
Reports from local media suggested that the incident began while Abe was attempting to mediate an argument between his two daughters, aged 18 and 15. Investigators were reportedly told that Abe had consumed alcohol before the confrontation escalated. Police allegedly arrested him at the family home in front of his wife and daughters.
The case gained additional attention after reports revealed that Abe’s daughter sought advice through ChatGPT before contacting a child consultation center anonymously. In a letter later read publicly by Abe’s agent, the daughter explained that she had not intended for the situation to escalate into a police case and denied some media claims suggesting severe physical violence.
In her statement, she said she was shocked when police officers arrived at the family home and emotionally distressed after witnessing her father being taken away by authorities. She also expressed regret over the public controversy and said she wrote the letter voluntarily without pressure from her family.
The Yomiuri Giants organization responded by emphasizing that violence cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. Team president Toru Kunimatsu issued a statement condemning violence while acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations surrounding the former manager.
The Yomiuri Giants are widely regarded as Japan’s most famous baseball franchise and are often compared to the New York Yankees because of their long history and popularity. Analysts say the controversy represents one of the most serious scandals to affect Japanese professional baseball in recent years.
