A notable spring storm is on the horizon for Alberta, prompting Environment Canada to issue alerts for various regions across the province. Expected to unleash fierce winds up to 100 kilometres per hour in the east-central and southeast areas, the storm may also bring heavy rainfall, dust storms, and potential snowfall in the northern sections.
The storm is anticipated to take shape over Alberta before advancing east towards Saskatchewan. Predominantly strong northwesterly winds will commence early Thursday and persist throughout the day, gradually dissipating into the evening. Some locations might experience sustained winds capable of causing damage to fences, roofs, branches, and unsecured outdoor items.
Meteorological experts indicate that east-central and southeastern Alberta will likely bear the brunt of the wind impact. Gusts reaching between 90 and 100 km/h pose serious hazards on highways and rural routes, especially for taller vehicles like trucks and buses. Authorities urge motorists to refrain from non-essential travel amidst the storm's peak.
In addition to wind, substantial rainfall is expected over the next 48 hours. Alberta’s central and eastern regions could see totals of 10 to 20 millimetres, while the northern areas might experience a mix of wet snow and lower temperatures. Localized thunderstorms could also spring forth, bringing brief heavy rain and compromised visibility.
Blowing dust is anticipated to become a significant issue in drier zones, chiefly agricultural lands. The combination of reduced visibility from dust and harsh winds may yield dangerous driving conditions during the storm. Citizens are advised to secure any loose outdoor items that may turn hazardous.
The same storm system is projected to influence Saskatchewan, where authorities have issued warnings for severe winds and heavy rainfall totals. Areas in Saskatchewan might receive more than 20 centimetres of snow alongside gusts exceeding 100 km/h as the storm progresses eastward.
Environment Canada remains vigilant, closely tracking the storm’s path, and advises that weather warnings may be updated as the situation evolves. Residents of Alberta should stay informed through official forecasts and emergency updates regarding potential weather dangers.
