All Seven Workers Confirmed Dead After Grasberg Mine Mud-Flow

All Seven Workers Confirmed Dead After Grasberg Mine Mud-Flow

Post by : Rameen Ariff

All seven workers who went missing after a mud-flow disaster at Indonesia’s Grasberg copper and gold mine have been confirmed dead, Miner Freeport announced on Sunday. This confirmation follows the recent discovery of five additional bodies from the accident site.

The tragedy occurred on September 8, when approximately 800,000 metric tonnes of wet material flooded the mine, trapping seven workers inside. The incident led to immediate concern over the safety of employees and prompted emergency rescue efforts at the mine, one of the largest copper and gold operations in the world.

Operations at the Grasberg mine have been halted for nearly a month as the company focused on rescue and recovery operations. Following the disaster, Freeport-McMoRan, the parent company, has warned that consolidated copper and gold sales in the third quarter will likely be lower due to the disruption in production.

Freeport has confirmed that it is advancing a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident. The company is also working closely with Indonesian government authorities to assess the full impact of the disaster and to develop plans for the mine’s future operations.

The mud-flow incident at Grasberg has drawn attention to mine safety practices in Indonesia and the need for preventive measures to protect workers at large-scale mining operations. Freeport emphasized that it remains committed to both the safety of its employees and the responsible management of the mine as it moves forward.
