A senior leader from the Selangor state government has called for stricter punishment, including maximum imprisonment and caning, for drink-driving offences following a fatal accident in Klang. V. Papparaidu stated that existing penalties are no longer sufficient to deter offenders, especially as such tragic incidents continue to rise across the country.
The call comes after a deadly crash on Jalan Raya Barat, where a motorcyclist in his 30s lost his life after being hit by a car driven by an individual under the influence of alcohol and drugs. According to Lim Jit Huey, the impact was so severe that the victim was thrown onto another vehicle and died at the scene.
Authorities have since detained the suspect, who is in his 20s, and a court has granted a four-day remand to assist investigations. The case is being probed under Malaysia’s Road Transport Act 1987 and the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, both of which carry strict penalties for offences involving impaired driving.
Papparaidu stressed that stronger enforcement and harsher punishment are necessary to prevent further loss of innocent lives. He also highlighted the need to support victims’ families, noting that the deceased was a father of two. The incident has once again sparked public debate in Malaysia over road safety and the urgent need for tougher laws against drink-driving.
