The Philippine Senate officially convened as an impeachment court to begin proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, deepening the country’s ongoing political crisis and intensifying divisions within the government.
The House of Representatives had earlier voted overwhelmingly to impeach Duterte over allegations including unexplained wealth, misuse of public funds, and controversial public remarks involving threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Sara Duterte has denied the allegations and accused political opponents of targeting her ahead of the 2028 presidential election, where she is widely expected to run for the country’s top office. Her legal team stated that an official response would be submitted according to constitutional procedures.
The impeachment battle comes at a politically sensitive moment for the Duterte family. Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, Sara Duterte’s father, remains detained by the International Criminal Court over crimes against humanity linked to his deadly anti-drug campaign that resulted in thousands of deaths.
Political tensions escalated dramatically last week when lawmakers allied with the Duterte family gained temporary control of the Senate leadership. The situation became more chaotic after Senator Ronald dela Rosa, a close Duterte ally and former police chief, resurfaced publicly after reportedly hiding for months due to fears of arrest linked to ICC investigations.
According to reports, dela Rosa narrowly avoided arrest by investigators before being placed under the Senate’s protective custody by political allies. The tense standoff later escalated into an exchange of gunfire between Senate security personnel and government agents outside the chamber, creating panic in Manila.
Philippine authorities are now investigating whether the security incident was connected to dela Rosa’s alleged escape from the Senate building. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. later appealed for calm as concerns grew over political instability in the country.
Analysts say the growing confrontation between the Marcos and Duterte camps reflects long-standing political divisions inside the Philippines, with the impeachment trial likely to dominate national politics in the coming months.
The outcome of the trial could significantly impact the country’s political future ahead of the next presidential election and may reshape alliances among powerful political families in the Philippines.
