Russian Strike on Sumy Injures 11, Including 4 Children

Russian Strike on Sumy Injures 11, Including 4 Children

Post by : Rameen Ariff

In another night of escalating violence, Russia launched a powerful overnight strike on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, injuring 11 people — among them four children, according to Ukraine’s emergency services on Friday.

The Sumy region, which shares a border with Russia, has endured relentless assaults since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Thursday night’s missile and drone attack was among the most destructive in recent weeks, leaving behind shattered homes, twisted metal, and frightened residents.

Ukraine’s emergency services confirmed the incident on Telegram, reporting that the Russian strike hit a residential multi-story building, several private homes, and key infrastructure facilities. Images from the scene showed rescuers pulling debris from collapsed walls as emergency teams treated the wounded on-site.

Local governor Ihor Kalchenko said the attack also targeted the railway depot, where several train carriages were destroyed, and nearby administrative buildings suffered heavy damage. He added that rescue and recovery operations were ongoing and that emergency teams were working around the clock to clear the rubble and restore utilities.

“Russia struck civilian areas again — our homes, our families, our children. This is not a battlefield; this is terror,” Kalchenko said in an emotional statement.

This latest strike highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in northeastern Ukraine, where civilians continue to bear the brunt of Moscow’s aggression. Despite repeated international condemnations and sanctions, Russian attacks on border regions like Sumy have persisted, leaving thousands displaced and traumatized.

The Ukrainian Air Force said its defenses had intercepted several drones during the assault, but some managed to penetrate and hit populated zones. Authorities have urged residents to remain in shelters amid fears of renewed overnight strikes.

The Russia-Ukraine war, now entering its fourth year, shows no sign of easing as both sides brace for a harsh winter. The city of Sumy — once a peaceful industrial hub — now stands as another symbol of the suffering caused by the conflict.
