New intelligence reports suggest that Russia may be working on a dangerous new weapon that could target Starlink satellites in space. Starlink is a large satellite network that provides internet service across the world and is widely used by Ukraine during the war.
According to intelligence sources from two NATO countries, this weapon is known as a “zone-effect” system. The idea behind it is to release hundreds of thousands of very small metal pellets into space. These pellets would spread across Starlink’s orbit and damage or disable many satellites at the same time.
The pellets would be very tiny, only a few millimetres wide. Because of their size, they could be hard to track. This could make it difficult to quickly prove who carried out the attack.
Experts say such a Russia Starlink attack could cause serious problems. The pellets would not only hit Starlink satellites but could also damage other satellites used by many countries, including Russia and China. This could lead to chaos in space and harm global communication, defence systems, and navigation services.
Starlink satellites play a very important role in Ukraine. They help soldiers communicate on the battlefield, guide weapons, and keep civilians connected when normal networks are destroyed. Because of this, Russia sees Starlink as a major threat.
Russian officials have earlier warned that private satellites helping Ukraine could become targets. Russia has also claimed it now has missile systems that can hit satellites in low orbit.
Unlike past satellite attacks that used missiles, this new method would aim to take out many satellites at once. Intelligence reports say the pellets could be released from small satellites that are not yet in orbit.
Space experts say controlling such a weapon would be very difficult. Once the pellets are released, they could spread quickly and damage everything in that orbit path. Over time, the debris could also fall into lower orbits and put space stations at risk.
Both the International Space Station and China’s space station operate below Starlink’s orbit and could face danger if debris spreads.
Some experts believe Russia may never actually use such a weapon because it would also damage its own space systems. Others say the threat alone could be used to scare rivals and gain pressure without firing anything.
At present, there is no clear information on when or if Russia could deploy this system. Intelligence officials say the project is still under development, and many details remain secret.
The idea of a Russia Starlink attack has raised serious concerns worldwide, as space has become a critical part of modern life. Any large-scale damage in orbit could affect countries far beyond the battlefield.
