Intense Christmas Storm Sparks Flood Alerts in LA

Intense Christmas Storm Sparks Flood Alerts in LA

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Flash flood warnings have been issued across Los Angeles and much of Southern California as a significant Christmas storm unleashes heavy rain, strong winds, and heightened concerns over mudslides.

This storm is fueled by an atmospheric river dubbed the Pineapple Express, which pulls warm, moisture-rich air from Hawaii to inundate the U.S. West Coast. Meteorologists predict that rainfall totals could rival those expected over several months, falling within just a few days.

State of Emergency Declared

Governor Gavin Newsom of California has proclaimed a state of emergency in several counties, including Los Angeles, to facilitate quicker emergency responses and ensure resource availability as the situation evolves.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings, stating that life-threatening flash floods, heavy mountain snow, and severe winds are likely through Christmas Day.

“Lives and property are in significant jeopardy,” the agency advised, urging residents to exercise caution and limit travel.

Heavy Rainfall, Power Disruptions, and Road Closures

The storm struck late Tuesday night, resulting in downed trees, flooded streets, and reduced traffic flow throughout Los Angeles. Rainfall intensified on Wednesday, causing power outages as lines fell, affecting thousands of residences and businesses.

By Christmas Eve, around 80,000 customers state-wide were reported to be without power, with some locales recording nearly 10 inches (25.4 cm) of rain during the initial storm.

Meteorologists indicated that while the initial storm briefly receded from the Los Angeles area late Wednesday, another weather system was anticipated to arrive overnight, expected to persist into Christmas Day.

Mudslide Risks in Fire-Damaged Locations

Regions near recent wildfire sites remain particularly vulnerable. Coastal communities like Pacific Palisades and Malibu are under careful observation, as the compromised terrain struggles to absorb heavy rains, heightening the risk of mudslides and debris flows.

Transportation officials announced multiple road and freeway closures across Southern California in response to flooding, fallen trees, and mudflows. Emergency teams responded to several accidents related to inclement weather.

Evacuations and Shelter Openings

The American Red Cross has opened shelters in various communities after evacuation orders were issued. Authorities are advising individuals in high-risk zones to seek safer ground before conditions worsen.

Meteorologists alert that flooding, rockslides, and mudslides could persist from Wednesday afternoon through Friday, particularly in hilly and mountainous regions.

Travel Plans Disrupted as Residents Adapt

In spite of numerous warnings, many residents continue shopping and preparing for Christmas. Others have opted to cancel their travel plans.

One local resident shared their decision to stay home after receiving multiple emergency alerts, citing hazardous driving conditions at night. While some holiday gatherings proceeded as planned, others were modified due to weather concerns.

High Winds and Mountain Snow Further Complicate Conditions

In addition to flooding, forecasters predict winds gusting up to 130 km/h in the mountainous and desert areas of Los Angeles County. In the Sierra Nevada, over a foot of snow has already accumulated, with estimates of up to five feet expected as the storm progresses.

Authorities continue to urge residents to stay informed, avoid flooded thoroughfares, and limit travel as Southern California faces a precarious and dynamic Christmas storm.
