PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) has reported a major surge in passenger traffic during the Eid al-Fitr travel season, selling more than 734,000 long-distance train tickets across Java between March 11 and 17, 2026.
The increase highlights strong public preference for rail transport during peak festive travel, as millions journey to their hometowns. According to officials, departures from Jakarta’s Daop 1 zone alone reached over 353,000 passengers, while arrivals crossed 163,000 during the same period.
Key stations such as Pasar Senen and Gambir in Jakarta recorded the highest passenger volumes, reflecting intense travel movement within the region. Additional traffic was also reported across major West Java stations including Bekasi, Cikarang, and Karawang.
Local train services also saw high occupancy rates, with popular routes like Pangrango and Siliwangi operating near capacity. This surge aligns with Indonesia’s annual “mudik” tradition, where people travel in large numbers during Eid to reunite with family.
Authorities have advised passengers to plan journeys in advance, arrive early at stations, and ensure all travel documents are ready, as demand is expected to remain high throughout the festive period.
