Pope Leo XIV visited the historic ruins of Hippo in Annaba on April 14, 2026, marking a deeply symbolic pilgrimage linked to his spiritual inspiration, Saint Augustine. The visit is part of his first-ever papal trip to Algeria and highlights his emphasis on peace and interfaith unity.
The pope’s journey to Annaba, known in ancient times as Hippo, represents a spiritual homecoming, as St. Augustine lived, preached, and wrote some of Christianity’s most influential works there. Despite heavy rain and tight security, the pope visited the archaeological site, reflecting on the legacy of one of the greatest thinkers in Western philosophy.
During the visit, Pope Leo XIV prayed near the ruins of the ancient Roman city, which include a theater, market, and basilica where St. Augustine once preached. In a symbolic gesture promoting peace, he planted an olive tree and released white doves, reinforcing his message of reconciliation and harmony.
Accompanied by members of his Augustinian order, including Rev. Joseph Farrell, the pope walked through the historic site and listened to a local Algerian choir. His presence emphasized the importance of St. Augustine’s teachings as a bridge between cultures and religions.
In his address, the pope highlighted the suffering caused by war and injustice, calling for greater efforts toward peace and dialogue. His visit comes amid global tensions, particularly in the Middle East, where he has repeatedly urged restraint and diplomacy.
The visit also brought attention to St. Augustine’s North African roots, reminding the world that one of Christianity’s greatest theologians spent most of his life in Africa. His contributions to philosophy and theology, including works like “Confessions” and “The City of God,” continue to influence global thought.
Pope Leo XIV described the visit as deeply personal, reaffirming his commitment to promoting peace, reconciliation, and interfaith understanding. The pilgrimage stands as a powerful reminder of the need for unity and respect among different cultures and religions in today’s world.
