The Vatican is preparing to release Pope Leo XIV’s first official encyclical, a major church document expected to focus on artificial intelligence and the ethical challenges surrounding rapidly advancing technology. Vatican officials confirmed that the pope signed the document on May 15, exactly 135 years after Pope Leo XIII signed the historic “Rerum Novarum” encyclical on workers’ rights during the Industrial Revolution.
The upcoming document is expected to emphasize that artificial intelligence must always respect human dignity, social relationships and peace. Pope Leo XIV believes the AI revolution raises serious moral and social questions similar to those created by the Industrial Revolution more than a century ago.
Church officials say the encyclical will place AI within the broader framework of Catholic social teaching, which addresses labor rights, justice, economic fairness and human responsibility. Experts believe the Vatican is positioning itself as one of the strongest global voices calling for ethical regulation of AI technologies.
Pope Leo XIV has repeatedly warned about the dangers of relying too heavily on artificial intelligence in daily life. He has raised concerns about chatbot relationships replacing real human interaction, deepfake technology spreading misinformation and AI-generated content affecting creativity and truth.
The Vatican has already taken several steps to influence the global AI debate. In recent years, it launched the Rome Call for AI Ethics, supported by major technology companies including Microsoft, IBM and Cisco. The initiative promotes principles such as accountability, transparency, privacy and fairness in AI systems.
The pope has also highlighted the environmental impact of AI development, especially the massive energy and water usage required for large data centers. Vatican officials argue that technological progress should not come at the cost of environmental damage or social inequality.
The new encyclical could also increase tensions between the Vatican and the Trump administration, which strongly supports rapid AI development as part of America’s economic and national security strategy. The United States has opposed several international efforts aimed at stricter regulation of artificial intelligence.
Pope Leo XIV has additionally expressed concern about the use of AI in warfare, especially in conflicts involving drones and automated weapons systems. He recently called for stronger international oversight to ensure that critical military decisions remain under human control rather than machine control.
The Vatican believes artificial intelligence should remain a tool that supports humanity rather than replacing human intelligence, morality and compassion. The release of the encyclical is expected to become one of the most closely watched religious and technology discussions of the year.
