A jhalmuri vendor from West Bengal’s Jhargram has claimed that he is receiving death threats from unknown callers after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited his roadside snack stall during the election campaign earlier this year.
The vendor, identified as Vikram Sao, said the threatening calls started shortly after Prime Minister Modi stopped at his shop on April 19 during a high-profile political campaign in the region. The brief interaction became widely viral on social media and brought sudden attention to Sao and his business.
According to Sao, he has been receiving repeated phone and video calls from international numbers allegedly linked to Pakistan and Bangladesh. He claimed the callers threatened to kill him and his family and warned him about possible bomb attacks.
Sao said some callers used video calls to frighten him by making threatening gestures and displaying weapons on camera. He added that the individuals also sent alarming WhatsApp messages warning him of serious consequences.
The jhalmuri seller stated that the callers did not directly mention his interaction with Prime Minister Modi, but he believes the threats began only after the Prime Minister’s visit made headlines across the country.
Prime Minister Modi had stopped at Sao’s stall during the campaign and was seen asking the vendor to prepare the traditional Bengali snack made from puffed rice, onions, chillies and mustard oil. In the viral video, the Prime Minister also insisted on paying for the food despite Sao initially refusing to accept the money.
Following the threats, local police have reportedly increased security around Sao and his family. Authorities have deployed police personnel near his residence while investigators continue to examine the origin of the calls and messages.
Officials said a formal investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the threats and determine whether the calls were genuine or part of an organised attempt to create fear. The incident has sparked concern over online intimidation and the safety of ordinary citizens who suddenly gain public attention through political events.
The case has also attracted widespread discussion on social media, with many users expressing support for the vendor and demanding strict action against those responsible for issuing threats.
