A 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit the central Philippines on Tuesday evening, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake struck off the coast with its epicenter recorded about 11 kilometers (7 miles) east-southeast of Calape, a town in Bohol province with nearly 33,000 residents.
Local officials immediately issued a warning about a possible “minor sea-level disturbance” and advised people living in Leyte, Cebu, and Biliran to stay away from beaches and avoid coastal areas as a precaution.
The USGS initially reported the quake at magnitude 7.0 but later revised it to 6.9. Meanwhile, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake and said that no action is required.
Earthquakes are common in the Philippines, which lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity. While many quakes are too weak to be felt, powerful ones can strike without warning and cause serious damage.
So far, there have been no reports of casualties or damage from this recent quake, but authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
