James Gray’s latest film “Paper Tiger” has emerged as one of the standout movies at the Cannes Film Festival, with actor Miles Teller receiving widespread praise for his emotional and mature performance.
The film premiered at Cannes over the weekend and quickly attracted attention from critics and audiences. “Paper Tiger” is one of only two American films competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or award this year.
Miles Teller plays Irwin Pearl, a hardworking family man living in 1980s New York with his wife and children. The story follows the Pearl family after Irwin’s brother becomes involved in a dangerous project connected to the cleanup of the Gowanus Canal, leading to threats from the Russian mafia and growing pressure on the family.
Director James Gray described Teller’s performance as one of the film’s strongest elements, saying he wanted the character to show strength and vulnerability without becoming overly sentimental. Gray also revealed that he had admired Teller’s acting for years after hearing about him through filmmaker Damien Chazelle.
Teller explained that he connected deeply with the role while personally dealing with difficult circumstances after losing his home in devastating fires. He said the themes of family, safety, and emotional struggle helped shape his performance in the movie.
The actor also shared that playing a father for the first time in a major dramatic role challenged him emotionally. Teller said he drew inspiration from his own father and grandfather, describing them as strong but emotionally sensitive men who balanced toughness with compassion.
James Gray said the film explores moral decay and the increasingly transactional nature of modern society. According to the director, the polluted canal in the film symbolically reflects corruption, pressure, and emotional emptiness within society and family life.
“Paper Tiger” also stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver and is expected to receive a theatrical release later this year. Early reactions from Cannes suggest the film could become one of the most talked-about American releases of 2026.
