Pakistani Journalist Imtiaz Mir Killed Over Pro-Israel Remarks

Pakistani Journalist Imtiaz Mir Killed Over Pro-Israel Remarks

Post by : Rameen Ariff

In a shocking incident in Karachi, Pakistani journalist and TV anchor Imtiaz Mir was assassinated after making pro-Israel remarks, marking a grave attack on press freedom in Pakistan. Police said Imtiaz Mir was gunned down on September 21 as he left his office in the Malir area, and authorities have since arrested four extremists in connection with the murder.

The suspects, identified as Ajlal Zaidi, Shahab Asghar, Ahsan Abbas, and Faraz Ahmed, are alleged members of the banned Zainabiyoun Brigade, a radical organization with links to extremist activities. Investigators believe the group carried out the targeted killing under the instructions of a handler based abroad. Ballistic evidence reportedly connects the seized weapons to the murder.

According to officials, the killing of Imtiaz Mir was politically motivated and triggered by his televised remarks supporting Israel — a highly sensitive issue in Pakistan. Authorities described the assassination as an example of how extremist groups continue to threaten journalists for expressing independent or controversial opinions.

The arrest of the four suspects came after an extensive investigation by Karachi police and federal intelligence agencies. Sources confirmed that confessions have been obtained, and forensic tests matched bullet casings from the scene with the recovered firearms.

The death of Imtiaz Mir has sparked outrage among journalists, civil rights activists, and international observers who say the killing highlights the growing risks faced by media professionals in Pakistan. Many see this tragedy as a serious blow to free speech and a reminder of the dangers confronting those who challenge extremist narratives.

Authorities have promised a transparent trial and stricter measures to protect journalists across the country. The murder of Imtiaz Mir serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need to defend press freedom and ensure justice for those silenced by violence.
