Pakistan has stepped up its diplomatic push to mediate between the United States and Iran, with a four-country group including Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt forming a coordinated effort to reduce tensions. The initiative, led from Islamabad, aims to open backchannel talks and eventually host direct negotiations between Washington and Tehran as the conflict continues to escalate.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed that both the US and Iran have shown confidence in Pakistan’s role as a facilitator. Officials stated that a “Committee of Four” has been created to design a structured diplomatic process, including confidence-building steps, ceasefire discussions, and eventual negotiations on key issues like nuclear activity and control over the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism, saying he is “pretty sure” a deal with Iran could happen soon, while also confirming indirect talks through Pakistani intermediaries. However, his statements have been mixed, as he continues to keep military options open and has even suggested targeting strategic Iranian assets, highlighting contradictions between diplomacy and pressure tactics.
Despite these efforts, major obstacles remain. Iran has called US proposals “unrealistic and excessive” and denied formally participating in Pakistan-hosted talks. Key disagreements include demands over nuclear restrictions, missile programs, war reparations, and sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts warn that deep mistrust between both sides makes a breakthrough difficult in the short term.
Meanwhile, the situation on the ground continues to worsen. The US has increased its military presence in the Gulf, while Israel has intensified strikes on Iranian targets, raising fears that ongoing escalation could derail diplomatic efforts. Experts caution that while Pakistan’s initiative has opened a channel for dialogue, the success of any agreement will depend on immediate ceasefire steps and trust-building measures between the warring sides.
