Pakistan has reportedly deployed thousands of troops, fighter jets and advanced air defence systems to Saudi Arabia under a confidential defence agreement between the two countries. The move comes during heightened tensions in the Middle East linked to the ongoing Iran conflict.
According to multiple security and government sources, Pakistan sent around 8,000 military personnel along with nearly 16 aircraft, most of them JF-17 fighter jets jointly developed with China. Reports also claimed that two squadrons of drones and a Chinese-made HQ-9 air defence system were included in the deployment.
The military equipment and systems are reportedly being operated by Pakistani personnel, while Saudi Arabia is financing the operation. Officials familiar with the matter described the deployment as a combat-capable force intended to support Saudi Arabia if the kingdom faces further attacks.
Sources said the troop deployment mainly carries an advisory and training role during the current conflict, although Pakistan already maintains military personnel in Saudi Arabia under previous agreements. The latest deployment significantly expands that presence amid rising regional instability.
The confidential defence pact between the two countries reportedly allows for the deployment of up to 80,000 Pakistani troops if required. Some officials also claimed the agreement includes the possible deployment of Pakistani warships, although this could not be independently confirmed.
The development comes at a sensitive time as Pakistan has also emerged as a key mediator in the Iran conflict. Islamabad previously hosted talks between the United States and Iran and played an important role in helping broker a temporary ceasefire in the region.
The reports have drawn international attention because of the scale of the military deployment and Pakistan’s dual role as both a regional mediator and a military ally of Saudi Arabia. Neither Pakistan nor Saudi Arabia officially commented on the latest reports at the time of publication.
