Pakistan has been ranked the most polluted country in the world in 2025, according to a report released by IQAir. The findings highlight a worsening air quality crisis, with pollution levels far exceeding global safety standards.
The report reveals that concentrations of PM2.5 — fine particulate matter that can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream — reached levels up to 13 times higher than the limits set by the World Health Organization. These particles are primarily produced by industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and biomass burning.
Major cities including Lahore, Karachi, and Hyderabad recorded hazardous air quality levels, often crossing the “unhealthy” category on the Air Quality Index (AQI). The situation poses serious health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions.
Globally, the report noted that the top 25 most polluted cities were concentrated in India, Pakistan, and China. India’s city Loni ranked as the most polluted city worldwide, followed by Hotan in China.
The study also showed that only a small percentage of cities worldwide met WHO air quality guidelines in 2025, indicating a broader global environmental challenge. While some countries reported improvements due to favorable weather conditions like La Niña, overall air pollution remains a major concern.
Experts warn that prolonged exposure to high PM2.5 levels can lead to severe health issues, including heart disease, lung disorders, and premature deaths. The report underscores the urgent need for stricter environmental regulations, cleaner energy adoption, and improved urban planning.
The findings serve as a wake-up call for policymakers to take immediate action to tackle air pollution and protect public health.
