Pakistan Hit by 4.8 Magnitude Earthquake, Fifth Tremor in Month

Pakistan Hit by 4.8 Magnitude Earthquake, Fifth Tremor in Month

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Pakistan experienced another earthquake early Tuesday, with the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reporting a magnitude 4.8 tremor. The quake struck at 1:21 am IST, with its epicenter located at a latitude of 25.48 degrees North and a longitude of 66.69 degrees East. The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which increases the intensity of ground shaking and raises the risk of damage to infrastructure and buildings.

This earthquake marks the fifth seismic event in Pakistan in less than a month, highlighting the country's vulnerability to tectonic activity. Earlier on December 5, a 3.6-magnitude quake struck at a depth of 40 kilometers. Prior to that, on November 25, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake jolted the country at a depth of 120 kilometers. On November 21, a stronger 5.2-magnitude tremor was recorded at a depth of 135 kilometers, followed by a 3.9-magnitude quake on November 20 at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

Shallow earthquakes, like the one recorded on Tuesday, are generally more dangerous because seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the surface, causing stronger shaking. Regions across Pakistan, particularly Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan, lie near major fault lines, making them highly susceptible to seismic activity. Even Punjab and Sindh, located along the northwestern edge of the Indian Plate, face risks due to their proximity to tectonic boundaries.

Pakistan’s geographical position along the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates makes it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Experts continue to warn residents in vulnerable regions to remain alert for aftershocks and to ensure safety measures are in place.

The latest tremor reinforces the urgent need for earthquake preparedness, especially as seismic activity has been frequent and unpredictable in recent weeks. Authorities and local communities are closely monitoring the situation to minimize potential damage and ensure public safety.
