Oman and South Korea Forge Agreement for Environmental Collaboration

Oman and South Korea Forge Agreement for Environmental Collaboration

Post by : Maya Rahman

The Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Korea have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at reinforcing their bilateral ties and enhancing collaboration in the realms of environment, climate change, and sustainable development. This significant agreement was inked during the Seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi, Kenya.

The MoU aspires to establish a durable partnership grounded in equality and mutual interests, concentrating on environmental protection and the welfare of both present and future generations. It advocates for joint initiatives at both bilateral and global levels to tackle escalating environmental challenges, showcasing the dedication of both nations towards a robust environmental alliance.

Oman's delegation was led by Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, with Korea represented by Kum Hanseung, Vice Minister of Climate, Energy, and Environment.

Core collaborative areas outlined in the MoU include managing air quality, conserving water resources, combating pollution, safeguarding biodiversity, addressing desertification, advancing the circular economy and waste management, developing solutions for climate change such as carbon reduction technologies, and facilitating the transition to a green economy with projects centered on hydrogen and eco-friendly buildings.

Additionally, the MoU delineates actionable measures for cooperation, including the exchange of information and specialists, staff training, joint project development, and the organization of seminars and workshops. These endeavors aim to bolster knowledge sharing and enhance technical expertise between the two countries, promoting sustainable development and environmental resilience.
