The Oktoberfest 2025 beer festival in Munich was temporarily closed on Wednesday morning after a bomb threat was linked to a deadly house fire in northern Munich. Police confirmed that the threat came from the suspected perpetrator of the explosion at a residential building, where at least one person was killed.
Authorities said the house fire was deliberately started during a domestic dispute. It is still unclear if the person who died in the blaze was the suspect or someone else. Another person remains missing but is not believed to be a danger to the public.
Emergency services, including police and firefighters, launched a major operation in the early hours after the fire was reported at a detached house. Local media reported that gunshots and explosions were heard during the incident. Police also found booby traps inside the building, which required special forces to safely defuse them.
Officials later discovered a letter containing the Oktoberfest bomb threat, allegedly written by the suspect. As a precaution, police evacuated workers from the Theresienwiese fairgrounds, where Oktoberfest is held, and carried out a detailed search for explosive devices.
Munich police announced on social media that the Oktoberfest grounds would remain closed until 5:00 pm while checks were completed. The official Oktoberfest website also confirmed the closure.
This year’s Oktoberfest 2025 began on September 20 and is scheduled to end on October 5. The world’s largest beer festival attracts nearly 6 million visitors every year, making safety a top priority for authorities.
