Oman's National Records and Archives Authority (NRAA) has introduced a pivotal new publication titled "Oman-Russia Relations in the Nineteenth Century AD – A Documentary Study Based on Russian Archives." This release is a crucial part of the NRAA’s initiative to fortify Omani and Arab academic resources through meticulously documented historical materials, enhancing research into Oman’s vibrant diplomatic past.
The work is substantiated by 2,852 documents from Russian archives, including official letters, reports, maps, and photographs. It meticulously chronicles the 19th-century dynamics between Oman and Russia, illustrating the strategic significance of Omani ports in global maritime commerce.
Organized into three primary sections, the study explores the evolution of diplomatic and commercial relations, investigates Russian involvement in the Gulf area, and outlines Oman’s political, economic, and societal landscape during that time. Notably, the book features over 50 rare archival records from Russia, complete with detailed indexes for scholars navigating the material.
Dr. Hamad bin Mohammed Al Dhoyani, Chairman of NRAA, emphasized the publication’s portrayal of Oman’s historical significance and the essential role of Russian documentation in grasping international relations. The author, Dr. Dharar Mohammed Fadhl Al Mawla, noted that the process of translating and authenticating these documents took ten years, offering new insights into Oman’s narrative beyond just Anglo-French perspectives.
Dr. Ahlam bint Hamoud Al Jahwari, Director Specialist for Documentary Studies, highlighted that this publication marks the introduction of Russian archival resources to Arabic-speaking academics for the first time. The analysis of the timeline from 1792 to 1917 underscores Oman’s increasing political and economic links with Russia and its pivotal role in historical trade networks.
This publication provides scholars with a fresh perspective on Oman’s international narrative and reinforces the authority’s commitment to enhancing the accessibility of global historical records for the Arab academic community, all while adhering to high scholarly standards.
