The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia has reported a significant chance of snowfall this Thursday across the northern regions, specifically in Qassim, and the highlands of Tabuk and Hail, as a powerful weather system sweeps over the area. This forecast follows a series of warnings, with Qassim currently on red alert for heavy rains that could lead to flooding.
Meteorologists predict that temperatures in elevated areas might fall below zero degrees Celsius, creating conditions conducive to snowfall, along with thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds. While such weather events draw attention, experts indicate that winter snowfall in these regions is not uncommon.
According to Mohammed bin Reddah Al Thaqafi, a Saudi astronomer and member of the Arab Union for Space and Astronomy Sciences, snowfall occurs seasonally in northern Saudi Arabia. Although it does not adhere to a set astronomical pattern, it usually takes place between December and February, with areas like Tabuk, Al-Jouf, and Arar being the most affected by Mediterranean weather influences.
Al Thaqafi highlighted areas that are likely to see snow this season, such as Jabal Al Lawz, Alaqan, and Al Dhahr in Tabuk; Sakaka and Dumat Al Jandal in Al-Jouf; Arar in the Northern Borders; and Jabal Aja and Jabal Salma in Hail, along with the highlands of Abha in Asir. Although snowfall may vary yearly, this list includes some of the most reliable locations for winter conditions.
He also urged drivers and outdoor adventurers to exercise caution during snowy conditions, warning of slippery roads and reduced visibility. He emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to avoid accidents. Snowfall has already been reported on Jabal Al-Lawz in Tabuk, where the peaks are now cloaked in white.
The National Center for Meteorology anticipates that snow and unstable weather will persist from early afternoon to evening. The advisory also predicts moderate to heavy thunderstorms, which may cause flash flooding, hail, and strong winds across various regions. Spokesperson Hussein Al Qahtani reassured that the NCM is closely monitoring the evolving situation and refuted social media claims regarding widespread flooding in Riyadh as unfounded. He encouraged the public to consult only official weather channels as uncertain conditions linger across the Kingdom.
